30TH THURSDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: PUTTING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD

BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa

Luke 13:31-35

In our first reading (Ephesians 6:10-20), St. Paul urges us to wear spiritual armor: truth as our belt, righteousness as our breastplate, faith as our shield, salvation as our helmet, and the Word of God as our sword. St. Augustine teaches, “The armor of God is not for show but for battle.”

This armor enables believers to resist temptation (1 Thessalonians 3:5), stand firm against evil (1 Peter 5:8-9), and proclaim God’s message (Ephesians 6:19-20).

This spiritual armor serves three purposes: it provides defensive protection against evil, it empowers us to share faith, and it is essential for spiritual survival. May we wear this armor boldly!

In our gospel reading (Luke 13:31–35), Jesus laments his rejection in Jerusalem. The evangelist Luke reveals Jesus’ sorrow, divine mercy, and patient love. Jesus says, “How often have I desired to gather your children together…” (Luke 13:34). This passage shows God’s love amidst rejection and patience despite human flaws.

St. Teresa of Calcutta reminds us, “God loves us, not for what we are, but for what He wants us to be.” Think of the Prodigal Son, who experienced God’s patient love despite rebellion. Jesus reiterates this, saying, “I have come to call sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:32).

May we experience God’s patient love, recognize rejection’s consequences, and return to God’s embracing arms. May Jesus’ love transform us!

Today, spend some time reflecting on how you can equip yourself spiritually. Where do you need God’s love and patience? How can you proactively live your faith? May our spiritual armor shine brightly! Amen.
