HOMILY THEME: GRADUAL PROCESS

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

LUKE 13:18-21

As the saying goes, “It’s the ugly caterpillar that turns into a beautiful butterfly after seasons.” This transformation is a gradual process that takes time and patience. Yet, in Nigeria, there’s a popular phrase, “Sharp-Sharp,” meaning to do things quickly, immediately, and with instant results. This “Sharp-Sharp” mentality implies a desire for instant success, growth, wealth, and achievement, often at the expense of patience and steady progress.

Jesus addresses this mentality in the parable of the mustard seed. He compares the kingdom of God to “a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches” (Luke 13:19). The mustard seed’s transformation shows how God’s kingdom—and even our own success—begins small and requires patience to develop fully. It’s a reminder that greatness often starts humbly, growing through persistence and grace.

Many of the world’s greatest achievements began as small ideas, gradually nurtured to success. Likewise, many notable people started with humble beginnings and climbed to greatness through perseverance and patience. So, how patient are we when progress seems slow? Are we willing to trust the process even when success doesn’t come “sharp-sharp”?
