31ST FRIDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: WISDOM OF FORESIGHT
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
An African proverb says, “The stone that you see coming should not blind you.” This proverb aptly illustrates the actions of a clever steward in Jesus’ parable. The steward, accused of mismanagement, foresaw the prospect of joblessness once he knew he would be dismissed. He acted swiftly to gain favour with his master’s debtors by reducing their debts, effectively building a network of friends who would welcome him after his dismissal. The master praised the steward not for dishonesty, but for his resourcefulness in preparing for his inevitable unemployment.

Jesus narrated this parable to teach his followers the value of foresight. He challenges short-term thinking and last-minute actions, encouraging us to plan carefully for the future. Jesus calls on Christians to look beyond the temporary material world and to prepare for eternal life. He remarks that the children of this world often demonstrate more shrewdness than the children of light, indicating that many are adept in economic and political planning, but few exhibit spiritual foresight.
The message is clear: we are to use our resources wisely in working for the life hereafter. Are we setting our hearts solely on worldly matters, or are we focused on preparing ourselves for heaven?
