31ST SUNDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME (LOVE) — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE LEARN TO LOVE OURSELVES?

BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa

Deut. 6:2-6, Heb. 7:23-28, Mk. 12:28-34

Emily and Ryan are a loving couple who faced challenges in their relationship. Emily struggled with self-criticism, constantly doubting herself and focusing on flaws. She’d say, “I’m not good enough” or “I’m a failure.” This negativity spilled over into their relationship.

Ryan noticed Emily’s self-criticism and tried to reassure her, but Emily’s inner turmoil affected her interactions. She’d snap at Ryan over minor issues, doubt his love and support, and withdraw emotionally.

One day, Emily realized her self-criticism hurt Ryan and their relationship. She began practicing self-love through journaling positive affirmations, focusing on strengths, and embracing imperfections.

As Emily learned to love herself, she transformed. She listened more attentively to Ryan, showed appreciation for his efforts, and smiled more often. Ryan noticed the change and felt more loved and valued.

So, to follow Jesus’ teachings in Mark 12:31, we must recognize the obstacles preventing us from loving ourselves and promote self-compassion, self-acceptance, and self-love. The lesson is clear: loving yourself directly impacts how you love others.

By embracing self-love, you become more supportive, show empathy, and spread positivity. As Mark 12:31 says, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Emily learned to love herself, and that love overflowed to Ryan.

Finally, this weekend, I’m taking Jesus’ advice (Mark 12:31) VERY seriously—loving my neighbor (myself) as myself!

Don’t bother me; I’ll be busy.

Self-care Sunday (every day); positive affirmations; eating extra pizza (because love).

Happy weekend, friends! Know that I love you (after I love myself, of course!)
