32ND SATURDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “But when the Son of Man comes, will he find any faith on earth?”

3 John 5-8; Psalm 111(112):1-6; Luke 18:1-8
Today’s gospel challenges us, not only to be people of prayer, but also to pray persistently, intently, with focus and trust. The widow knew what she wanted. She knew whom she needed to talk to about it. She was persistent and focused, and since she was convinced of her plight, she would not give up until she accomplished her mission. In a sense, she prayed her way through to the solution to her problem by being persistent and unyielding, despite the menacing and awful nature of the adversary. The example of prayer given to us by the Lord Jesus invites us to make prayer a way of life, meaning that no moment of our lives should remain unconsecrated to God in prayer. Both past, future and present must be consecrated to God in prayer. Nothing and no time is outside the purview of God’s reign. Creating a vacuum in any aspect of our lives is an invitation for the evil one to take residence. All must be subjected to God and subsumed under God.

In addition to making prayer our way of life, today’s first reading also invites us to make charity a way of life, just like Jesus; bring God’s light into the lives of those we come across, especially the needy and those on the margins of society. Charity is a clear form of witness, not subject to any form of division and sectionalization, but rather, transparently recognized by humanity. Amidst life’s challenges and uncertainties, complicated by the lack of vision, it is easy to despair and give up, even as prayer is concerned. Christians must not despair or give up; we must remain on bended knees as we struggle with the powers of the evil one. Jesus asks: will the Son of Man find any faith on earth when he comes back? Not if people despair. Let us remain faithful, charitable and hopeful. That is what disciples are made of.
Lord, sustain us in your love and under your outstretched arm. Amen.
