32ND SUNDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “She, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

1 Kg 17:10-16, Heb 9 : 24 – 28, Mk 12:38-44

“Not how far but how well,” is daily wisdom. In our response to God, it is “not how much, but how willing.” Lack of “political will” and “goodwill” decimate families, communities and countries daily. The widow only had enough for two as last meal. Elijah showed up hungry. She willingly shared and made food for three. She did not say, “sorry, I don’t have enough for three.” God blessed her with abundance. She was blessed in an unusual manner because of her courageous, unusual and excessive generosity.

The widow in the gospel offered the little that she had to live on. Her offering was pittance compared to the big dole outs by the wealthy. Yet, her offering was more valuable than everyone else’s. The wholeheartedness undergirding her presence before God surpassed the surpluses from others. Christ highly commended her unusually sacrificial spirit and generosity as well. She models what God expects of us: giving everything. God deserves all. It is not about how much money we put out. It is about a generous disposition that realizes that we have nothing except that which God has put in our trust. With it, we must serve God, whether it is spent in Church, on the poor, on the needy, on our families or on our own needs. The glory of God must be the goal (1 Cor 10:31). But the greatest of all gifts is that of ourselves to God, who wants us before the gifts we bear. With fellow humans, we must learn to share, no matter how little we have to give; it is through such acts of generosity, in addition to the gifts we bring to God’s house, that we demonstrate depth of our love for God.

Father, make me a selfless giver like Christ, your Son, who gave his life for me. Amen.
