33RD MONDAY HOMILY IN THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “JESUS, SON OF DAVID, HAVE PITY ON ME!”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
1 Mac 1:10-15, 41-43, 54-57, 62-63; Psalm 118(119):53, 61, 134, 150, 155, 158; Luke 18:35-43
Today’s first reading begins the series from Maccabees on authentic faith. The influence of Greek and pagan culture devasted Judaism in the centuries just before Jesus’ time. We read today about the compromises, betrayals, rebellions, distractions, blasphemies, sacrileges, and defilements.

Many went the easy way with them. The few who resisted such disastrous allurements and chose to stick with their covenantal obligations were persecuted and martyred. In today’s world, people make tons of compromises that amount to rebellion against, and betrayal of, God. Idolatry is normalized as people replace God with selfish ideologies, life styles, materialism and activities. I wonder how many would be brave enough to stand for/with God, preferring to die “rather than to be defiled…or to profane the holy covenant.” Only that God would also heal and restore them. In Jesus, the afflicted blind man encountered that God in today’s gospel. The one, who is light itself, restored his sight and he could see again, but not before Jesus confirmed that the blind man had his priorities right. Jesus knew he was blind but still posed the question: “What do you want me to do for you?” You walk into church to pray, and you hear Jesus’ voice from the sanctuary: “what do you want me to do for you?” How would you respond? It should be with faith in the fact that Jesus can do whatever it is for you. You must be single-minded and focused in your petition, dwelling on actual needs instead of fantasies. And you must keep at it without letting anyone/anything distract you until you attain your goal.
Lord, heal our physical and spiritual blindness that we may see; please meet us at our point of need. Amen.
