33RD THURSDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: JESUS CRIED

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

LUKE 19:41-44

Victor Hugo, in his great book Les Miserables, says, “Those who do not weep, do not see.” As Jesus came to the end of His earthly journey, He wept over the city of Jerusalem, saying, “Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.” He loved the people and the city of Jerusalem, but He was sad to see how both the beauty of the city and the people were degenerating and how the people were ignorant of the impending dangers that awaited them.

It is unusual to see Jesus cry. He cried over the death of His friend Lazarus, and He cried for His country’s people for demonstrating sheer indifference and stubbornness against the message of salvation. They despised the Saviour and missed the moment of grace and repentance. Jesus foresaw the consequences of their sin and what their stubbornness would cost them.

Parents share in the cry of Jesus when they weep over stubborn and reckless children; teachers share in the cry of Jesus when they weep over lazy and indifferent students; preachers share in the cry of Jesus when they weep over a people who are nonchalant toward the message of repentance. We share in the cry of Jesus when we weep for the moral decay we see and for the loss of religious and traditional values.

What are the social and moral situations that make us shed tears?
