34TH MONDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: TWO SMALL COINS
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
Wise people say we’re richer when we give and poorer when we keep. While wealthy people gave their offerings from the abundance of their wealth, Jesus noticed a simple and humble widow putting in two small coins. Jesus praised her for her generosity because her two coins were her whole livelihood.

Jesus measured her generosity in proportion to her entire wealth and noticed that her standard of giving was great compared to her standard of living. Her generosity resulted from her faith; it was an act of love and a sign of total surrender to God. Money gives us a sense of security and boosts our ego, and so generosity requires some degree of selflessness. When we make an offering or give a donation willingly, lovingly, and cheerfully, we derive a sense of satisfaction and happiness. Research has shown that generous people are happier and more peaceful.
Scriptures instruct us “to do good, to be rich in good deeds, liberal and generous” (1 Timothy 6:18). When we count the many blessings we receive from God, we’ll never complain of generosity fatigue. God blessed the two small coins of this nameless widow, which became a source of blessing for her. Small is great when God is in it.
How generous are we in offering ourselves and resources to God for good causes?
