34TH SATURDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: WE ARE USEFUL AND UNIQUE BEFORE GOD

BY: Fr. Isaac Awe

Matthew 4:18–22 Feast of St. Andrew, the Apostle

Their word goes forth throughout the earth says today’s psalmist. What are we known for? What are we good for? Hope we have not forgotten that one day we shall give report? Tomorrow shall tell!

Dear friends in Christ, as we celebrate the feast of St Andrew today, I want us to reflect on our purpose in life and how useful we are before God and man. We should keep in mind that we are created for a purpose and we are unique in our own way. Hence, our fruitfulness is determined by our reaction to God’s call and how receptive we are to his word.

What is God’s call on our lives? When Jesus chose his first disciples, he called ordinary people. Peter and Andrew were brothers and fishermen by trade. Like the other apostles they were non-professionals who had no wealth or position. In choosing ordinary people Jesus made extraordinary claims — to leave all — family, kin, and occupation–for the kingdom of God. When the Lord calls each of us to follow him, he makes the same claim — let nothing stand between you and Jesus. He chose these men, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of becoming under his direction and power. When the Lord calls us to serve, we must not shrug back because we think that we have little or nothing to offer. The Lord takes what ordinary people, like us, can offer and uses it for greatness in his kingdom. Do we make our lives offerings to the Lord and allow him to use us as he sees fit?

Reflection: We are unfinished products, we should not loose hope!

PRAYER: Lord, fill us with gratitude and generosity for all you have done for us. Take our lives and all that we have as an offering of love for you. Amen

Happy Weekend!
