3RD FRIDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: SILENT, STEADY & FRUITFUL

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

Mark 4:26-34

Meister Eckhart, a theologian, philosopher, and mystic, says, “God is a great underground river that no one can dam up and no one can stop.” Sometimes, we wrongly think God is too slow and bypass Him, taking a faster lane. At other times, we think God is absent and resort to self-help and autonomy.

God is always at work in our lives, even if we do not see Him or pay attention to His work. He works silently, secretly, slowly, steadily—behind the scenes and in the background. Jesus gives an example of how God works through a grain of mustard seed. He says, “When it is sown in the ground, it is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can dwell in its shade” (Mark 4:31-32). The seed grows slowly, steadily, silently, and fruitfully.

In like manner, God raises people from humble beginnings and makes them great. Likewise, He transforms insignificant organizations and institutions into magnificent conglomerates. We need to pay close attention to the amazing grace of God at work in our lives despite the challenges and difficulties that surround us.

Do we believe that God has planted the seed of greatness in us and that He can transform a small beginning into something wonderful?
