3RD FRIDAY HOMILY OF ADVENT — YEAR A

3RD FRIDAY HOMILY OF ADVENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “HAIL, FULL OF GRACE…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
This first formal meeting between the Angel Gabriel and Mary marked the definitive beginning of the final unfolding of God’s plan. God could easily have done this in a strictly divine manner and dropped the Messiah into our midst without processes. That God chose to use human beings and angels, thus involving collaborators, is itself a mark of God’s love for humanity, and underscores the dignity of the human person. Even though the Son to be born will be called Son of the Most High and inheritor of the throne of David, ruling over an everlasting Kingdom, God decided that he should be one like us and take flesh from a lowly virgin in Nazareth.

The unusual nature of the project was enough to inspire fear and doubt in the young woman. But, reassured that it was the Lord’s doing, the Lord for whom nothing is impossible, she assented, even though it was never heard of that a virgin conceived and gave birth without a man. She believed and surrendered: “Let it be done to me according to your word.” Through her, Isaiah’s prophecy from many centuries earlier came to its ultimate fulfilment, in the gift of her Son, our Immanuel. May Advent strengthen our resolve to do God’s will with total surrender, after the example of our Blessed Mother. Just like Mary, may we have the grace to cooperate with God in bringing Christ to others and putting a smile on peoples’ faces this Christmas in a very special way.
“O Key of David, opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom: come and free the prisoners of darkness!” Amen.
