3RD MONDAY HOMILY OF LENT: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: WISDOM IN UNEXPECTED PLACES!

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

2 Kings 5:1-15; Psalm 41(42); Luke 4:24-30

Maybe the problem is that we think we have God figured out. We expect Him to act exactly how we think He should. When He doesn’t, we are disappointed and begin to cry foul. Naaman the leper expected Elisha to come lay hands upon him and throw some spiritual acrobatics and incantations. But in the end, a bathe in the river Jordan was enough. The people in Jesus’ home town also thought they had Jesus figured out – for them, he was merely the son of a carpenter, and he had nothing much to offer.

Friends, we must avoid the ‘familiarity that breeds contempt’ syndrome. We mustn’t think we have all it takes to understand God’s ways. That we go to mass everyday and receive communion on each of those days does not mean that we can predict God. Let us try to be humbler. Sometimes, wisdom is found in the most unexpected places; in the mouth of a servant girl, or in the advice of hired hands, as we see in the first reading; in the insight of the weak and oppressed… We must stop thinking we have God figured out. Truth is, we don’t. Let’s be humbler, that we may better learn his ways. Amen.

Good morning dear. God bless your week ahead.
