3RD SUNDAY HOMILY OF THE LENT — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: “IF YOU DO NOT REPENTANCE, YOU WILL LIKEWISE PERISH”
BY: Fr. Justus Oruh
Exodus 3:1-8.13-15, 1 Corinthians 10:1-6.10-12, Luke 13:1-9
(a) The call for repentance is another important aspect of Lent. It is a journey back to God. For this purpose, God called Moses to bring his people in the slavery in Egypt back to him. The journey took 40 years. God guided them an supplied to them. Some were however stubborn, disobeyed and refused to repent. The scripture says, “God was not pleased with most of them” (1 Cor.) Some of them perished in their sins.

(b) If we look around, we could see people who have gone down, who suffer great misfortunes or some accidents of this life. We are standing not because we are better and holier than them. We may have done the worst. Their fate calls us today to thinking. The scripture says, their story serves as a warning to us. (1 Cor.)
(c) God gives us enough time for repentance. 40 years journey, and 40 days of Lent represents this time symbolically. God gave extra-time so the Fig tree can blossom, even when it’s time is up. We appreciate the time and years God has given to us. The call for repentance began with the wonder and miracle of the burning bush. God does wonders and miracles in our lives to awaken in us the journey of repentance. May each day of our life be a journey back to God.
