3RD SUNDAY SERMON OF LENT — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: “I AM sent me to you.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Exodus 3:1-8.13-15, 1 Corinthians 10:1-6.10-12, Luke 13:1-9
The third Sunday of Lent has alternative readings featuring the Samaritan Woman, meant especially to go with the Rites of Christian Initiation. The Exodus reading tells us how God called Moses and put his Name and authority behind him. God has reassured us of His abiding presence in just the same way and we must work to end oppression in our communities and enthrone God’s reign. The alternate reading has God giving water to the people through Moses from dry rock. Where humans see impossibility, may God’s assistance and intervention get us over the blockades in life.

The gospel’s call to repentance must be heeded promptly. We must not take God’s patience and grace for granted. The time we have is God’s gift to us so that we may mend our ways and cultivate greater intimacy with God. The alternate gospel from John on the Samaritan Women presents Jesus as the Spring of life-giving water, against the background of the alternate first reading with the miraculous flow of water from the rock. The Samaritan Woman drank from that Spring and her old life was replaced with a new one in her encounter with Jesus. She did not only become a disciple; she also went on mission and brought an entire village to faith in Jesus. As a true missionary disciple, her story challenges us to latch on to Jesus and drink of his very life; and may we be zealous in sharing our find with others just as she was.
Father, refresh and enliven humanity through Jesus Christ, your gift to our broken world. Amen.
