3RD THURSDAY HOMILY OF ADVENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: GOD ANSWERS PRAYERS
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
It is God who brings people out of obscurity to greatness. He raised Zechariah and Elizabeth from the dungeon of childlessness into being the great parents of John the Baptist. God had a great plan for them, but he chose not to unravel the plan immediately. He deliberately delayed his plan and gave them a child in their old age. Perhaps, he wanted to test their patience and perseverance, as well as the sincerity of their devoutness. In their advanced age, God sent an angel who delivered a message to Zechariah and said, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John” (Luke 1:13).

The angel further declared, “He shall be great in the sight of the Lord” (Luke 1:15). Zechariah and Elizabeth gradually and happily received an answer to their prayers because they remained steadfast in their prayers and commitment to God, even when they were advanced in age and there was little or no chance of having a child. St. Albert the Great teaches us that “The greater and more persistent your confidence in God, the more abundantly you will receive all that you ask.”
Can we imitate the virtues of patience and perseverance like Zechariah and Elizabeth in tough situations of life?
