3RD THURSDAY HOMILY OF THE EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Acts 8:26-40, Ps. 66:8-9,16-17,20, John 6:44-51

Now that Jesus has revealed what working for the “food that endures” to his disciples is, he goes at length to explicate what it means that he is the “bread of life.” He is the means for all that it takes to live fruitfully, not just spiritually, but also physically, emotionally, psychologically and socially.

Faith in him grafts us unto him as gifts of the Father. Grace, God’s grace, is what makes that journey of faith possible, not just our human power or endeavor. And from that relationship with him comes the pledge that just as we share in his life here on earth, so would we be raised up by him to share in his glory eternally. That is the will of the Father and that is the pledge of the Lord himself: “I will raise him up on the last day.” That is what inspired hope in the witness of the apostles and early disciples of Jesus to go through the difficulties, persecutions and struggles of their time. That is also evident in St. Stephen’s endurance of persecution and death without backing down from upholding the truth. Today’s first reading introduces another segment of the Easter witness with Saul and Philip on the scene. Because of persecutions, championed by Saul and others, the apostles and disciples dispersed and fled Jerusalem. As they went, the joy of the good news went with them. Thus persecution, evil as it was, was turned by God into an instrument for bringing the good news to other places and peoples. The Samarians, who received Philip, were blessed and their city was filled with great joy. May God keep us faithful at all times and turn the adversities and misfortune we endure into sources and instruments of blessings and fruitfulness for us and those around us.

Lord, may we find joy and life in worshipping you. Amen.
