4TH SUNDAY IN ADVENT - HOMILY

3RD WEEK OF ADVENT – SATURDAY HOMILY (YEAR B)

THEME: HIS NAME IS JOHN

BY: BISHOP GERALD M. MUSA

LUKE 1:57-66;

What is in a name? The son of Zechariah and Elizabeth was named John. The name means the Lord is gracious. All who witnessed the naming ceremony wondered, “What then will this child be?” Zechariah knew what John would be. His vocation was to be a Prophet of the Most High God (Luke 1:76).

A reality show on the BBC titled Monastery, written by John Sowers shows us the meaning of vocation. This reality show presented 5 men who went to experience the monastery for forty days. Just two days before they completed their forty days, one of them, Tony met one of the monks Brother Francis, and said, that a part of him wanted to continue staying in the monastery, but the other part of him wanted to go back into the business world. He said, he couldn’t continue to be in the monastery singing and reading the bible and abandon the lure of money and the pleasure of life in the outside world. Brother Francis told him vocation is not just limited to where you are or what you do, but more importantly, it is about discovering who you are. He handed a white stone to Tony and said to him, you have a name and a family name, but you have to search for the real name, which God has given you. He quoted the book of Revelation 2:17, “Your new name is written on a white stone in heaven.”

Do you know our essential vocation is to discover who we are?
