4TH MONDAY HOMILY OF LENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “Now I create a new heaven and a new earth, and the past will not be remembered…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Isaiah 65:17-21, Ps. 30:2,4-6,11-13, John 4:43-54

Today’s liturgy focuses on the restoration that comes with God’s forgiving love. The first reading from the time after the Exile proclaims God’s goodness, healing and renewal as He pledges to restore Israel’s fortunes and fullness of life, the same kind of restoration that is seen in Jesus’ healing in today’s gospel. Israel’s return from exile points to our return from the darkness of sin through repentance to the life of light and grace with God.

The outcomes of such a return are joy and gladness in God’s presence that propel us to praise his glorious name, because God’s love and mercy are once more manifested in his goodness to us. The word “remember” plays a significant role in this journey. The prophets always urge us that in our afflictions, we must always remember and never forget God’s goodness, love and compassion towards us, especially his wonders of old. In today’s reading, God does “not remember” our sins as His mercy and compassion cleanse, heal and renew His people. Not remembering our sins, God’s mighty power unfolds anew in Jesus Christ, who gives us life as he did with the court official’s son. Such gift of life is anchored on his resurrection, the assurance of eternal life to believers.

Lord, speak health and life into our weaknesses and brokenness. Amen.
