4TH MONDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: JESUS HEALS THE SUFFERING

BY: Fr. Ernest Cross

Heb 12: 1 – 4, Mk 5: 21 – 43

The most troubled character probably in the entire gospel account is presented to us in this morning’s gospel reading. He was so vicious that not even fetters and chains could keep him in check; he lived alone amid the tombs. He frequently seriously injured himself and screamed among the tombs day and night.

Here is an out-of-control individual who, from a Jewish point of view, is residing in an area that is out of bounds —a cemetery in a Gentile area. As far as Jesus was concerned, however, he was not out of bounds. Jesus spoke to him during their meeting. He stopped acting irrationally after he met Jesus.

In fact, we are told that he responded to Jesus’ summons by telling a great many others about everything that Jesus had done for him. This deeply troubled individual turned become an evangelist, sharing the gospel with the Gentiles.

It is difficult to envision a more significant change in someone’s life. We must all undergo some sort of transformation. We all need the Lord to help us become better people. We can all get out of control and out of boundaries. This morning, we pray to the Lord for the ability to surrender to his authority and to be brought inside the limits of his love.
