4TH TUESDAY HOMILY IN EASTER — YEAR A

4TH TUESDAY HOMILY IN EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 11: 19–26; John 10:22–30
As we continue to explore the imagery of sheep and shepherd, the relationship between Christ and his disciples, us, is in focus. Christ’s care for us is profoundly demonstrated in the sacrificial and courageous care of a good shepherd for his sheep. Solidarity between sheep and shepherd is so strong that the sheep recognize and obey the shepherd’s voice even as the sheep is particularly known to and by the shepherd.

Note that the notion of knowledge in the bible conveys a sense of intimacy and mutuality. The sheep enjoy the protection and care of the shepherd. As our Good Shepherd, all of those qualities are characteristic of Jesus’ love for us. He protects us with his own life, which is poured out for our nourishment and salvation. He shepherds us beyond our wants and fears, and even through death to eternal life. He takes us on the path that he tread. We follow the way he paved with his life, in obedience to his voice. That was the character of discipleship in the Early Church that led to them being called Christians for the first time in Antioch. They were Christ-like and lived lives that were marked by the presence and action of the Holy Spirit and by faith, charity and mutual respect. Like those early Church members, who, scattered by persecution, brought God’s word with them wherever they went, may we be effective bearers of God’s word wherever we go and to whomever we meet. Today’s social and multi-media challenges also present wonderful opportunities as we must transform them into media for the spread of God’s word.
Lord, may we remain faithful to you with firmness of heart. Amen.
