4TH WEDNESDAY HOMILY OF ADVENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: HOLY COVENANT REMEMBERED

A song rises higher when it comes from a wounded heart. Some of the most powerful and enduring songs in history were born out of deep suffering. Those who have walked through dark valleys often discover a unique voice of hope. A striking example is Miriam Makeba (Mama Africa), whose music inspired courage and resilience among South Africans and people across the world during the painful years of apartheid and segregation.

In Sacred Scripture, Zechariah’s inspiring hymn, known as the *Benedictus* (Luke 1:67–79), was a song of joy for God’s blessings. Zechariah and Elizabeth suffered hardship and quiet humiliation, as they endured the stigma of childlessness well into old age. His hymn traces the history of Israel’s salvation and proclaims how God “has shown mercy promised to our ancestors and remembered his holy covenant” (Luke 1:72). Significantly, the name Zechariah means “God remembers.”
It is therefore no coincidence that his song centres on divine remembrance. God remembers the promise, the agreement, and the covenant made with Abraham. In response, Zechariah remembers God’s goodness and faithfulness, and his memory becomes praise. The psalmist echoes this enduring truth: “He remembers his covenant forever, the word he ordained for a thousand generations” (Psalm 105:8). As we draw closer to the celebration of Christ’s birth, we are invited to reflect: Do we remember to sing songs of praise for what God has done in our own lives—especially after seasons of waiting, silence, and struggle?
