5TH MONDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “GOD SAW THAT ALL HE CREATED WAS GOOD.”

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Mark 6:53-56

The Church celebrates today, the Memorial of St. Scholastica, virgin. St. Scholastica was the twin sister of St. Benedict, the Patriach of Western monasticism. She was born in Umbria, Italy, about 480. Under Benedict’s direction, Scholastica founded a community of nuns near the great Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino. Inspired by Benedict’s teaching, his sister devoted her whole life to seeking and serving God. She died in 547, and tradition holds that at her death her soul ascended into heaven in the form of a dove.

The marvellous deeds of God are reiterated in the readings of today, as the Psalmist proclaims God’s glory: “Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord, my God, you are great indeed! You are clothed with majesty and glory, robed in light as with a cloak. ” (Ps 104: 1-2)
The first reading (Gen 1: 1-19) recounts the creation story in the Book of Genesis. At the end of each day, “God saw that all He created was good.” Only goodness can come from God, for goodness is His nature. In creating, God separates each entity, and they are all good. This goodness in creation was tainted by the “fall.” However, in Christ Jesus, “new creation” emerges through the Sacrament of Baptism, separating us from original sin and its loss of intimacy with God. Do you live in this newness?
Jesus in the gospel (Mark 6: 53-56) continues to bring about God’s goodness by compassionately healing the sick that came to Him. Even those who touched the fringe of His clothing were cured. The power and love of God are manifested in Jesus, the Eternal Son of God.
Dear friends, God’s creation at the beginning was “good,” but His new creation in Christ Jesus is “better” (2 Cor 5: 17). Due to the “fall,” creation has been groaning in sorrow and agony (Rm. 8: 22) but Jesus (the One on the throne) said: “See, I am making the whole of creation new” (Rev. 21: 5). The Lord Jesus is ever ready to meet our needs, to renew our lives. We need to approach Jesus with an expectant faith.
I pray that as we journey in life today, we will repent of our sins and approach Jesus for His touch of restoration. May we recognize in Jesus the power to heal and make whole. May all that concern us be made new today, that we may bring newness to the world around us. Have a restoration-full day!
