5TH SUNDAY HOMILY FOR EASTER – YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: GOD IS MAKING ALL THINGS NEW

BY: Fr. Cosmas Ukadike, C.M.

HOMILY: As John saw in his vision today, so it is, very true! God is making all creation new in Christ whom he has placed on his throne to restore our hope. (Rev. 21, 1-5). Newness of life and direction is what God wants for us his children.

Prior to the passion/ death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, just as he was winding up his mission, he gave his followers a new commandment of Loving one another (Jn 13, 34). A new commandment of love will certainly be the driving force for the onward newness of life which God desires for his children. This is because the summary and significance of his passion and resurrection was His love for his brothers and sisters.

It would be very difficult to comprehend the meaning of what Jesus did as Isaiah described, “Like a lamb lead to the slaughter house, he made no resistance” (Isa 53, 7). And thus, he mounted the wood of the cross on Calvary’s hill, without his men fighting to defend him.

In today’s first reading as St. John saw in his vision, through Jesus’ redeeming death and resurrection, God has placed Him on the throne of heaven where he sits to renew the whole of creation; making intercessions constantly for us (Rev 21,5). And as he has assured us, he is preparing our rooms up there so that where he is, we too shall come to be (Jn 14, 3), for he shall be our God and we shall be his people. And he will wipe away every tear from our eyes… and there will be no more mourning and sadness (Rev 21, 3-4).

Jesus has given us the key to unlock this newness of life. And this key is love.

Looking at the totality of the mission of Christ here on earth, we discover that it can be best described as “a love mission”. John 3, 16 says it all: “For God so loved the world that he gave us his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him may not perish but have everlasting life”.

And Jesus is insisting today in the Gospel that “by this love you have for one another; everyone will know that you are my disciples” (Jn 13, 35).

Suffice it to say dear friends that, the newness of life which the one who sits on the throne is declaring today (Rev 21,5), fundamentally begins with our loving of one another as God in Christ has loved us.

This love is all that is required to dwell eternally in the peace of Christ.

May God’s love bring newness into our lives, and may the breath of new freshness transform our situations.

Have a blessed week
