5TH SUNDAY HOMILY IN LENT — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: MERCIFUL REDEEMER
BY: Fr. Ernest Cross
Is. 43:16-21, Phil. 3:8-14, Jn. 8:1-11
The Pharisees who brought the adulterous woman to Jesus in the gospel reading were offering a straightforward solution to her moral failings. Put her to death by stoning.
Furthermore, it is evident from the gospel reading that Jesus did not handle moral failure in this manner. He realised that the Pharisee’s crude and dumb approach did not adequately address the complexity of the matter. The woman was solely perceived by the men who brought her to Jesus in relation to her recent background.

Jesus’ perspective on her was considerably more generous; he saw the entire picture of her life, not just a small part of it. Seeing the big picture of her life, he realised she had a future, one that those who brought her to Jesus would have denied her.
The Lord sees the big picture when he looks at us; he doesn’t get fixated on just one or two aspects. He hears more than just a few chapters about our life; he hears the whole story. The Lord is aware that our story is not yet complete and will only be fulfilled when he personally transforms our humble bodies into replicas of his glorious body.
