5TH SUNDAY HOMILY IN LENT — YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: HE MAKES ALL THINGS NEW AGAIN

BY: Fr. Justus Oruh

Is. 43:16-21, Phil. 3:8-14, Jn. 8:1-11

(a) We have a God who walks with us in the “Now” and in the present, thus capable of making all things new as beautifully expressed in Isaiah thus; “Look, I am doing something new, now it emerges; can you not see it? (Isaiah 43:18). St. Paul raked and crowded out all the wordily and ungodly life-style with all its promises and counted them as the past, rubbish and loss- a bygone while gaining Christ. And Jesus cancelled all the sins of the past of the adulterous woman, a new leaf was turned, a new page began when He told her, “go and sin no more”

(b) “No need to remember past events” (Is 43:18). Living in the mesh and recalling the mistakes of the past weighs us down, they laden us with guilt, they cause loss of self-confidence and are yokes that frustrates our future. God cancels the mistakes and sins of the past if we call upon Him with sincere contrition. One of the things we enjoy in the Sacrament of Confession is that it forgives our sins and cancels their guilt. The heart is left like a clean sheet. God has forgiven your past! A new thing is done in your life! A New beginning is come.

(c) “Can you not see it”? (Isaiah 43:18). Most times we are held back in the quagmire of guilt. We think God cannot forgive our many sins but as long as you still live in the “Now” and Now sincerely ask for forgiveness, no one can condemn you. The guilt of sin are like the heavy stones carried by the accusers of the adulterous woman to smash her. But the stones has been dropped thanks to the mercy and intervention of Jesus Christ who does not keep record of our sins. He was writing perhaps in comparison the sins of all the accusers and those of the woman on the sand. We know that any record and whatever is written on the sand and by mere finger of hands will be surely lost. If God means to keep record of our sins, He would write them on a memory tablet or hue them on stones and marbles- but if God marks our guilt, who would survive” (Ps. 130:3). We keep record, accuse and throw words on people like stones but we forget that at times we commit graver sins. But God keeps no record of sins a repentant sinner. While the 10 commandments and that of love are written on the tablet of stones, and in our hearts for the sake of memory and remembrance, the transgressions and sins against the commandments of God are written on something that has no storage system and capacity- the sand. Your past sins have been lost because you have repented sincerely. A new leaf has been turned- “can you not see it?
