5TH SUNDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: WHEN THE SALT LOSES IT TASTE…

Is. 58:7-10 / 1 Cor. 2:1-5 / Matt. 5:13-16
(a) The world around us is as bad, evil and decaying as it is, because we have not been salt and light enough. When the salt loses its taste and the supposed burning light already quenched; then, the foundation is destroyed.
(b) We all know how useful salt and light are in our daily lives. Even when all other ingredients are put and also in the right proportion, without the salt, the food remains tasteless. Salt is also used for cleaning dirty objects and also for the preservation of things that can decay. We could see and move about because there is light. Even a sound eye would not see unless there is light. Light is the source of energy. Without energy, everything collapses. When Christ makes us the salt and light of the world, we already know the task and what we represent in the world. We are to give good taste to this world and life, we are to give meaning to life of people. We are to preserve the world with the word of God, we are the burning lights (received on the day of Baptism) which dispels the darkness of sin and powers of the underworld. Were the light shines, people majorly comport themselves well.

(c) We do not need to do much to keep to the taste and the burning of the Light. St Paul says, I do not use high wisdom but only demonstrations; that is good examples. We do not matches or lighter to light up the lives of others but only with good examples and works of mercy as Isaiah 58 puts it; share your bread with the hungry, shelter the homeless; “then your light shall break forth like the dawn”. You will call and God will say, “Here I am”. Be a light to someone and season the the life with salt.
