6TH TUESDAY HOMILY OF EASTERTIDE — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: GOD HAS THE FINAL WORD
BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa
Acts 16:22–34; John 16:5–11
The devil may start the story, but God always writes the ending. This is because evil never has the final word when God is involved. The victory of evil over good is only temporary. The experience of Paul and Silas demonstrates how God overrules evil. The crowd of Philippians attacked Paul and Silas, and the magistrates tore their garments, beat them with rods, inflicted many blows upon them, and threw them into prison (Acts of the Apostles 16:22–23).

This persecution of Paul brought about unexpected positive outcomes: First, Paul and Silas did not allow their spirits to be crushed; rather, they sang joyful hymns even in the discomfort of prison; second, their self-control and positive behaviour led to the conversion of the jailer. The story of Paul and Silas shows us how God brings the best out of the worst of circumstances. Their story reminds us of the Old Testament Joseph, who was persecuted but lifted by God from the dungeon into glory. Seeing how God saved him, Joseph said to his brothers, “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today” (Genesis 50:20).
God has a way of turning things around according to His plan and purpose. Through His power, the same sun that melts wax hardens clay. Do you believe that God can change your worst situation into something beautiful?
