6TH WEDNESDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: DO NOT EVEN ENTER THE VILLAGE!
BY: Fr. Benedict AGBO
Genesis 8:6-13,20-22 Psalm 116 and Mark 8:22-26
The saving vessel that carries Noah and his family is the ark, built according to the directives of Yahweh. The ark is the symbol of the Church – also built according to God’s directives. The first thing that Noah does when he touches dry land is to offer sacrifice to the Lord. Noah’s sacrifice is a primitive prototype of the mass which is essentially a sacrifice of praise and gratitude for the gift of salvation. The guidance of the dove represents the guidance of the Holy Spirit in our journey towards salvation. We enjoy this in every mass through the ministry of the Word.

The Word of God as found in today’s 1st reading says that when the Lord perceived the pleasing odour of the incense (which we use in every high mass), he said in his heart: ‘I will never again curse the ground because of man because the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth’. Yes we prefer to manufacture instruments of war than instruments of peace. Just look at what is happening in Nigeria today and you see that the ruling political parties are becoming more ingenious in devicing new means of rigging elections than means of governing the country. God gave us a beautiful nation and a beautiful world to take care of, but we have polluted it with pride, selfishness, immorality, bribery and corruption and all forms of wickedness and violence. We want to be like God by cloning human beings, transgender madness, etc.
Our hope is that God will keep his word and remain patient with man’s wickedness and continue to provide new means of salvation. Like he saved the blind man of today’s gospel by taking him out of his village (Bethsaida was an environment of faithlessness) and warning him thereafter not to even enter his village again, he warns us not to infect ourselves again with the corrupt influences of our society. The mass remains a good way of beginning our day. But our spirituality today has gone past the ‘fuga mundi’ (flight from the world) mentality. We are now told at the end of every mass to GO IN PEACE TO LOVE AND SERVE THE LORD! We are told to go and extend God’s salvific ministry onto our society. May God bless you today!
