6TH WEDNESDAY HOMILY OF EASTERTIDE — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “I proclaim the God you already worship without knowing it.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 17:15, 22—18:1; John 16:12–15
Paul’s experience with the Athenians in today’s reading relates to the challenges that we have each time we encounter new evangelical frontiers, whether with individuals or with groups. As bearers of the good news, we need a sensitivity to what we meet on ground or in the persons we encounter. So, while bearing the good news, our sensitivity makes it easier for us to break new grounds.

The root of such realization is that God has put his goodness in humans, ordinarily, the reason St. Paul notes that “we are all God’s children.” Even when we run against the wall as St. Paul did when he mentioned the “resurrection of dead,” our efforts would sow the seed, and the Holy Spirit takes over thereafter. Paul even won some people over that day. More than being children of God though, we need a greater commitment on the level of discipleship, patterned after the example of the Lord, his teachings and instructions, and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who is united with Jesus is action and purpose. As we get deeper into our preparations for Pentecost, today’s gospel reassures us once more of the guidance of the Holy Spirit as teacher, guide and guard. How often have we acted like those Athenian intellectuals? We hear the truth or something really relevant and because we do not want to be part of it, we say: “we would like to hear you talk about this again.” That is usually our escape route from commitment. We pray for the grace and courage to hearken to God’s word always; and for the Spirit of discernment to distinguish that which belongs to God from what we owe to the other demands that are made of us.
Lord, we praise you for the wonder of your creation and our being; attune our ears to the bidding and voice of your Spirit. Amen.
