7TH THURSDAY HOMILY IN EASTER — YEAR A
7TH THURSDAY HOMILY IN EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “Holy Father, I pray not only for these, but for those also who through their word will believe in me.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 22:30, 23:6-11; Psalm 15(16):1-2, 5, 7-11; John 17:20-26
The concern of Jesus for Christians of future generations is center of today’s excerpts from the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus. The blessing of Jesus’ prayer for us today as those who will come to believe on account of the proclaimed words of others is reminiscent of what Jesus pronounced after showing Thomas his hands and side after his resurrection: “blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.”

The unity prayed for by Christ keys into our faith in the communion of saints. We are one with today’s Church and remain in faithful solidarity with the brethren that have gone before us and the future Church; that oneness is celebrated in our belief and commitment to upholding the faith and traditions handed down through the ages. That unity, which is inspired by the Trinitarian oneness, binds us to Christ and vice versa, and it also destines us for eternal life with him. This bond was what spurred St. Paul on through the difficulties of his mission, such that even as he survived one ordeal, he was reassured of the support of the Holy Spirit through the future ordeals that he had to undergo as part of his witness to Christ. His witness in Rome would be rendered with his very life, the ultimate price. Like St. Paul, we pray for the grace, wisdom and courage to stand firm in defense of our faith, irrespective of the cost.
Lord, give me the courage to stand by you and with you at all times. Amen.
