HOMILY THEME: Courage to Stand for Faith and Called to Unity in Faith

BY: Fr Deotacious Chikontwe SMA

Acts 22:30, 23:6-11; Psalm 15(16):1-2, 5, 7-11; John 17:20-26

INTRODUCTION
Thursday of the 7th Week of Easter reminds us of the courage, unity, and hope that faith brings.

ABOUT THE FIRST READING
Our first reading this morning, we hear about Paul’s defense before the council. This shows his strong faith and determination. He does not back down when confronted by opposition but uses the opportunity to speak about the resurrection. His focus on the core of his faith shows that he trusts God completely, even when others try to silence him.

WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM THE FIRST READING?
This courage inspires us to reflect on how we respond to challenges in our own lives. Do we stand firm in our beliefs, or do we hesitate out of fear or uncertainty? Paul reminds us that our faith is not just for quiet moments but for times when speaking out may be difficult.

ABOUT THE GOSPEL READING
In our Gospel reading for today, Jesus prays for all His followers to be one. He speaks of the unity He shares with the Father and asks that His disciples live in this same unity. This is not just about being together but about being united in love, trust, and mission.

WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM THIS GOSPEL PASSAGE?
Unity is a powerful witness to the world. When believers work together and show love for one another, it reflects the love of Christ. Division among us can weaken this message and distract from what God wants to do through His people

CONCLUSION
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, we can ask God for the same courage Paul had. When we rely on His strength, we can face trials and stay faithful. Paul’s example encourages us to trust that God will guide us, even when things seem hard.
We can take steps toward unity by loving others, being patient, and seeking peace in our relationships. When we live as one, we reflect Jesus’ prayer and help share His message with those around us. Unity starts with small acts of love and grows into something much greater.

The Lord be with You!

Amen 🙏
