7TH THURSDAY HOMILY OF EASTER – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “Take courage. For just as you have borne witness to my cause in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness in Rome.”
BY: Fr. Anthony Ewherido
Acts 22:30; 23:6-11; Psalm 15(16):1-2, 5, 7-11; John 17:20-26
As Paul faced his adversaries during his trial in Jerusalem, the Holy Spirt played his advocacy role by providing the wisdom needed to respond to the accusations. Divided over the matter, the Sanhedrin freed Paul, only for the Lord to inform him that his travails were not yet over as he must still go on to Rome to bear witness.

In his trials, he was united with Christ in whose destiny he shared. That destiny is again one of the subjects of today’s gospel reading as Jesus prays that we may be where his, or follow where he has preceded us. In addition, he prayed for unity among his disciples, one that is solidly founded on the communion between him and the Father, and in turn inspires communion between him and us. Such unity is very much in need in Christ’s Church during these very troubling times. With the grace of her Lord and the companionship of the Holy Spirit, the Church will continue to thrive despite the challenges of the moment. But, we must all join in the prayer for the unity of Christ’s Body. Not only that we remain united among ourselves but also that we are one with Christ. That oneness is sustained by Jesus’ indwelling in us and our reciprocal effort to live in him. In communion with Christ, we live courageously, without being afraid of anything or anyone. Sworn to the Name of God, introduced to us by Christ, we bow to only one power; God’s. He fills us with life and redeems us by the gift of eternal life even in death. With the Spirit’s advocacy, no enemy is insurmountable.
Spirit of courage and strength; abide in us. Amen
