THE ANGELS CAN BE AMAZING

0

One of the best experiment I had conducted when I was a Catechist in my church was the question I threw to the catechumens on a windy evening, in the church porch, where we often have our classes, was the difference between a minor prophets and a major prophets. I got bunch of answers. But I was thrilled so seriously with the answer of a young little girl. She said; minor prophets are those who were unable to perform any duty, while major prophets were those who had done so many things. She might be right anyway, but to an extent, she was wrong.

It would get you more confused why I’m using prophets as an illustration. Yes, it’s so similar to what we celebrate today. There are much variation in the explanation of angels and archangels. Of course, they are all angels, in another translation, can be interchangeably used as messengers of God. But in a clear version of it, the archangels are those who make important announcement, while the angels officiate on the minor declaration.

In one of St. Gregory the Great’s homilies on the Gospels, he tried to point out the function of each angels. He said that Angela are known by proper names as well, to indicate their powers and work. However, the beautiful home, which is the heaven where perfect knowledge is derived from the vision of Almighty God, if proper names are given to them, it is not that their identity can never be gotten without names. But when angels come to minister to us, even the names by which they are known with, will be taken away from their ministry. In other words, Michael means ‘Who is like God’, Gabriel ‘Strength of God’ and Raphael ‘Healing of God.’ All of which, come to form the beauty of God’s power and authority.

Therefore, the function as assigned to each had made a clear difference between an angel and archangel. In the fighting of battle and doing a big deed, Archangel Michael, is summoned. Whenever there’s need for a great message, Archangel Gabriel, takes over. Archangel Raphael, is well known to be a healing one. In all these, everyone of them, are too busy with a work to discharge at a point in time.

In the catechism of the Catholic church, we once were told that everyone has a guardian angel. The angel that protects, guide and directs each of our steps and doings. They are perfect souls that so divine, inclined with much power to be our aid. They are so amazing that, they draw us out from things that are bad and bring us very closer to God.
