HOMILY THEME: ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Apo 11:19,12:1-6,10, Psalm 44:10-12,16, 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, Luke 1:39-56
“Mary has been taken up into heaven; the host of angels rejoices.”
Today, heaven opens before our eyes as we celebrate the glorious Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Readings (Revelation 11:19a:12:1-6a.10ab, Psalm45:10.11.12.16, I Corinthians 15:20-27, Luke 1:39-56) are carefully chosen by the Church to dive us deep into this beautiful celebration. In the vision of St. John, we behold “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” This is not just a poetic image, but it is the truth of Mary’s destiny, a truth that flows from her perfect “Yes” to God. From the first moment of her life, she was preserved from sin, filled with grace, and chosen to bear the Word made flesh. She faced trials, symbolized by the dragon’s fury, but she trusted completely in God’s protection. Today’s feast proclaims that the same God who defended her on earth has now exalted her in heaven, body and soul, as Queen beside her Son.

Mary’s Assumption is not only her story; it is our hope. St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that Christ is the “first fruits” of the resurrection, and that all who belong to Him will share in His victory over death. Mary, our Mother, is the first to fully receive this promise after Christ Himself. Where she has gone, we too are called to follow. Her life assures us that heaven is not an abstract dream; it is a real destiny prepared for those who love God and live in His grace. Her Assumption is a sign that our frail bodies, if faithful, will be glorified, and death itself will be swallowed up in victory.
In the Gospel, Mary’s humility shines when she visits Elizabeth. She is not a queen demanding honour; she is the handmaid of the Lord, running in haste to serve. Her Magnificat reveals the secret of her greatness: she magnified God, not herself. She rejoiced in His mercy, trusted His power, and surrendered her whole being to His will. In lifting her into heaven, God confirmed forever that “He has exalted those of low degree.” Mary shows us that holiness begins not in grand achievements, but in humble faith, in the quiet yet radical choice to say, “Let it be done to me according to your word.”
Today, as we honour Mary in her Assumption, let us look to her not as a distant queen but as a tender mother who intercedes for us. She stands in heaven clothed with glory, yet her gaze is turned toward her children on earth. She reminds us that the struggles we face, the sacrifices we make, and the faith we keep will one day be rewarded with eternal joy. Let us walk with her, imitate her faith, and allow Christ to reign in our hearts so that when our earthly journey ends, we too may hear the voice of the King saying, “Come, share in your Master’s joy.” GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God bless you and your household always through Christ our Lord Amen.
