Eyewitnesses report that the assailants, riding a motorcycle, intercepted his vehicle near the site of the ongoing Type C hospital project. They allegedly shot at the tyres to force the car to stop. Once immobilized, they closed in and fired multiple shots at Fr. Eya at close range.
Although some initial speculation linked the attack to a kidnapping attempt, sources speaking to Daily Post believe the killing looks more like an assassination. Key reasons: Fr. Eya was alone in the vehicle, and there was no demand for ransom.
Fr. Mathew Eya is a native of Ugbaike in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area. Details from law enforcement and the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka are awaited as of now.
The killing has stirred shock and concern among local residents and religious communities. As investigations proceed, many are calling for heightened security for clergy and more thorough protection of persons carrying out religious duties across the state.
