Dr. Ayo-Maria Atoyebi, OP, Bishop Emeritus of Ilorin, breathed his last on March 8, 2025, at 12:55 PM. A man of deep faith, unwavering commitment, and intellectual brilliance, he dedicated his life to the service of God and His people. From his years as a Dominican friar to his decades as a bishop, Bishop Atoyebi’s influence extended far beyond the pulpit, shaping lives through his theological insights, Marian devotion, and pastoral care.

A Life of Devotion and Service
Born on December 3, 1944, in Okerimi-Oro, Kwara State, Nigeria, Bishop Atoyebi dedicated his life to the service of God and humanity. He was ordained a priest of the Order of Friars Preachers (Dominicans) on December 17, 1978. His commitment to theological education and pastoral care led to his appointment as the Bishop of Ilorin on March 6, 1992, and he was consecrated on May 17, 1992.
Leadership and Legacy
During his tenure as Bishop of Ilorin, which spanned from 1992 to 2019, Bishop Atoyebi was renowned for his dedication, wisdom, and compassion. He was a steadfast leader and a passionate advocate for peace, guiding his flock with unwavering commitment. Even after his retirement on June 11, 2019, he continued to serve the diocese with grace and humility, offering guidance and counsel whenever needed.
Marian Devotion and Theological Contributions
A devoted Marian scholar, Bishop Atoyebi promoted various Marian devotions and activities. He authored numerous books and delivered talks on the Blessed Virgin Mary, fostering deeper spiritual growth among the faithful. He initiated an annual Marian pilgrimage to Okerimi-Oro, his hometown, enhancing the spiritual lives of countless individuals. His theological expertise was further recognized through his membership in the theological commission of the International Marian Association.
