Pope Francis criticized both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala for their positions on immigration and abortion, respectively.

The pope answered a reporter’s question on Friday about the 2024 U.S. presidential election aboard the papal plane as it returned to Rome from an 11-day trip through Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore — one of the longest papal journeys in history.

While Francis stressed he is not American, will not vote in the U.S. election and did not mention either Trump or Harris by name, he criticized both the Republican and Democratic nominees. He said that anyone who expels migrants and does not welcome them is committing a “grave” sin. On abortion, he said, “Performing an abortion is killing a human being. Whether you like the word or not, this is killing. … It is an assassination.”

Both immigration and abortion are key issues in the U.S. election.

“Both are against life, whether it is the one who is chasing away migrants or the one that kills children,” Francis said. “We must be clear about this. Expelling migrants, not letting them develop, not letting them have a life is an ugly thing, it’s mean. Forcing a child from the mother’s womb is an assassination because there is life there. On these things, we must speak clearly—no ‘but’ or ‘however.'”

The pope, however, urged voting.

“You must vote, and you must choose the lesser evil,” the pope said. “Who is the lesser evil? That lady (Kamala Harris) or that gentleman (Donald Trump)? I don’t know. Everyone in conscience (has to) think about it and do this (make a choice).”
