CATHOLIC HOMILY FOR PENTECOST SUNDAY – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “SEND FORTH YOUR SPIRIT, O LORD…”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This is Pentecost Sunday. The Advocate promised by Christ has come to fill the hearts of the faithful and to inkindle in them the fire of his love. It has also come to Renew the Face of the earth! This renewal of the face of the earth is our own renewal. The presence of the Holy Spirit dispels every darkness. That is why while the apostles were sitting in the dark room in fear, “something appeared to them that seemed like tongues of fire” (Act. 2;1-11).

The apostles became bold and spoke different languages to the hearing of all people. They were speaking real living languages that people from different nations and races understood. The Holy Spirit opened their tongues to speak meaningful words. The people heard them clearly in their native languages. They understood the message of Christ calling them to repent from their sins. In this sense St. Paul wrote: “If you are guided by the Spirit you will be in no danger of yielding to self-indulgence, since self indulgence is the opposite of the Spirit” (Gal. 5:16-25).

The Holy Spirit has come to bear witness to Christ who said: “When the Advocate cones, whom I shall send to you from the Father… he will be my witness”(Jn. 15:26-27ff). Why did God send the Holy Spirit? So that we know and believe that he sent Jesus Christ. What is the Holy Spirit doing for us? To Renew the Face of the earth! Pray therefore to receive the Holy Spirit and let your face be renewed amen. Happy Pentecost Sunday.
