CATHOLIC HOMILY OF SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: HOLY TRINITY – GOD IN LOVE

BY: Fr. Anthony Chukwuebuka Ohaekwusi

Deuteronomy 4:32 – 34, 39-40; Romans 8: 14 – 17; Matthew 28: 16 – 20

The Solemnity of the Blessed Trinity is not just a reflection on the mystery of God in three persons, it is also a celebration of God as love. It reveals the basis of the unity in God by demonstrating the deepest realities of the ultimate God of love and the perfect love of God. This is because the idea that God is one in three persons remains a mystery that is appreciated through the experience of God’s love. Love is the reality that brings us to appreciate the nature and unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. By understanding that God is Love, we come to appreciate that God is One, because the Son is the love of the Father, and the Holy Spirit is the love between the Father and the Son. By appreciating this mystery of ultimate love, we are able to recognise and express love for God and for one another. The mysterious unity of three persons in one God, which focuses on love, mirrors the mysterious unity in the marital relationship between a man and wife, which is also centred in love. We are able to love because God loves.

I remember when I was in high school a friend of mine telling me how he gets more money from both his parents by making them compete to see who loves him more. So I decided to try his tricks on my parents. I took pocket money from my dad and immediately went to my mom to ask for money, thinking she would give me more money to please me. But she asked: did your dad not give you pocket money? I replied with worried face, “he gave me small change”, thinking she would be fooled. To my greatest disappointment she said: “this money is from both of us”. Of course she was right; they are not two, but one. What comes from one, comes from both. So nothing comes between them including me.

In God there is no contention or competition. His love is so pure and perfect to satisfy all our desires and concerns, a love that makes us children of God through Jesus. This love was revealed when He sent His Son to save us and make us co-heirs to the Kingdom, so we have a right of ownership in God’s family. Through baptism in the name of the Holy Trinity, we became an integral part of God’s family, bearing His Spirit. The Spirit of God we have received is not a spirit of timidity, but a spirit that makes us victorious in all circumstances. And because His love has made us one with Him, there is nothing to fear or worry about. If God, our Father, is love, we cannot be afraid of living and loving.

Remain lifted and do have a great Sunday
