CHRISTMAS DAY HOMILY – YEAR B

THEME: Tidings of Joy!

By: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Is. 52:7-10; Ps. 98:1-6; Heb. 1:1-6; John 1:1-18

Today, we celebrate Christmas, a time of gratitude and reflection on the birth of Jesus Christ, our saviour. In the scripture, the prophet Isaiah presents Jesus as a bearer of hope and salvation, a messenger of peace and good news. This sentiment is echoed in the Psalms, urging us to rejoice over the Lord’s magnificent deeds, the greatest of which is the birth of Jesus, signifying God’s unending love, faithfulness, and mercy. The Letter to the Hebrews elevates Jesus beyond prophets and angels, establishing him as the final and superior Word of God. In His incarnation, Jesus personifies God’s plan for salvation and forms an everlasting covenant with humanity.

Friends, the Gospel of John introduces us to the profound mystery of the Incarnation, stating that Jesus, the Word, existed from the beginning, sharing God’s divine nature. With the Word becoming flesh and dwelling among us, He offers us the gift of eternal life. John the Baptist testifies to this truth, preparing the way for the Word made flesh. As we celebrate Christmas, it’s an opportunity to deepen our faith, acknowledge the truth of God’s incarnation, and spread the love and joy of Christ. This season is a time of joy, forgiveness, and hope, marked by the light of Jesus shining in the darkness.

Good morning dear. Merry Christmas and a happy new year in advance.
