HOMILY THEME: DECIDE TO FOLLOW CHRIST AFTER BREAKTHROUGH

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Lk.18:35-43) Monday of the Thirty Third Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus heals a blind man. It was hard for the blind man to approach Jesus because of his handicap. But he expressed his want by shouting. The people were angry at him and told him to keep quiet. But Jesus heard his cry and approached him. It was a faith encounter. The blind man begged Jesus to let him see again. And Jesus granted him that grace which was complimented by the faith of the blind man. What was significant with this healing was the decision of the healed blind man to follow Jesus.

This was significant because not everyone who healed by Jesus followed Him. Many went on their way. Maybe they had their reasons. But this man decided to give glory to God. Even in our human situation, the action of this blind man was not automatic. Some, after having been graced, also went on their way. It is sad. Gratitude and praise would have been the best response. It reveals a lot about our attitude on asking grace and seeking God.

I knew of one family who had also begged the Lord for their child with a terminal illness. To make the long story short, by the grace of God, the child was healed, Before that, the parents promised to do anything in exchange for the healing of their child. They even promised to be more serious with their faith which they had taken for granted before. Unfortunately, after the healing, they had not changed at all. Worst, they had even forgotten God. They missed a very good opportunity to see God who had revealed Himself through the healing. They were contented with the grace of God. They neglected the God of grace.
