CYCLE II: HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF THE 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: COME BACK TO GOD, DISLOYAL CHILDREN

BY: Rev. Fr. Jacob Aondover ATSU

HOMILY: READINGS: JEREMIAH 3:14-17, PSALM 31, MATTHEW 13:18-23

Beloved friends in Christ, there is no gainsaying that humankind has failed God. He, the sower made mankind good in his image and likeness (Gen. 1:26); he made him a fertile ground to yield abundant fruits. God would rather have us be kind, compassionate, gentle, meek, humble, righteous, loving, caring, and peaceful.

Sadly and unfortunately too, man lacks spiritual depth, he has allowed himself to be chocked by the thorns (challenges) of life. The vicsitudes (pain, anxiety, ill health, poverty, joblessness, etc) characteristic of life today subsume God’s word in us making it practically impossible for man to yield rich and good harvest.

The call today is for us to hear the word of God, his law, statutes and ordinances, understand and keep them too. That so, we would represent those whose hearts are fertile soils bearing fruit and yielding plentifully (cf. Mat. 13:23). Beloved friends in Christ, God’s word calls us to hearken to Jeremiah’s invitation that we “Come back, disloyal children” (3:14). Even though we’ve failed our master and Father, we can start over again by leading good and righteous lives.

When we respond to him as we should, he give us shepherds after his heart who will feed us with knowledge and understanding (Jer. 3:15) and he’ll keep us as a shepherd keeps his flock (Jer. 31:10). May Nigeria respond to the sower’s call by shunning evil and embracing good thereby bearing fruits of love, peace, progress, etc. in hundredfold, sixty and thirty. May God keep us and give us shepherds after his heart through Christ our Lord…

BE A SHEPHERD TODAY, HELP SOMEONE.
