CYCLE II: HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF THE 9TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: BIBLICAL SPIRITUALITY : The wisdom that leads to salvation!

BY: Fr. Ben Agbo

HOMILY: * 2 Tim 3 : 10 – 17, Mk 12 : 35 – 37.

Jesus routed the Pharisees, Sadducees, Herodians, and the Scribes with a single stinker statement : “You are wrong because you understand neither the scriptures nor the power of God”. In today’s gospel he told the Scribes that he is not only the Son of David but the Lord of David because the scriptures teach us that ” In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God …which took flesh and dwelt among us”, Jn 1 : 1 – 14. Friends, you can’t be spiritual without the Word of God and the Spirit of God.

St Paul says in today’s 1st reading that we must keep to what we have been taught and know to be true. So the Word of God is only made safe for our consumption by the teaching authority of the Church’s magisterium, 2 Pet 1 : 20. From the scriptures we can learn the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus because all Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for refuting error ( admonition), guiding people’s lives ( exhortation) and teaching them to be upright ( teaching), 2 Tim 3 : 14.

Jesus promised that if we remain in his word we will be truly his disciples, Jn 8 : 31 and his father will love us, Jn 14 : 23 and we can ask whatever we want, Jn 15 : 7. The greatest problem we have today as Catholics is that many of us ( including priests) are not devoted to the Word of God as the wisdom that leads to salvation. We seem to depend more on the philosophies and theologies of men.

May God bless you today!
