CYCLE II: HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE 27TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: GO & DO LIKEWISE; GO & REMOVE THE FENCE!

BY: Fr. Benedict Agbo

HOMILY: * Gal 1: 6 – 12, Lk 10: 25.

The greatest tragedy of modern day Christianity is that we are gradually turning over to a different gospel; a gospel of prosperity not a gospel of detachment; a gospel of self survivalism not a gospel of compassion and love for others; a gospel of noisy and aggressive prayer not a gospel of quiet and meditative prayer; a gospel of sectionalism not a gospel of expansivity and universal brotherhood.

Jesus reminds us in today’s gospel that the business of Christianity must constitute of love of God and neighbour. And your neighbour is the one you see in need. A real Christian can’t be rich in the midst of poor neighbours. A real Christian can’t be comfortable in the midst of sick neighbours. A real Christian can’t be relaxed when his neighbours are suffering.

As the Samaritan removed the fence which society and religion had erected and helped the wounded Jew, so all are called to remove the fences of religious fanaticism and political bigotry and build bridges of love and functional objectivity. The lawyer was learned in the law but Jesus sent him to the Samaritan School to learn about love. May we stay put in this school and begin to remove all the negative fences put by our societal biases and prejudices.

May God bless you today!
