CYCLE II: HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE 12TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: GOD IS OUR EVERLASTING ROCK, PUT YOUR TRUST IN HIM

BY: Rev. Fr. Jacob Aondover ATSU

HOMILY: READINGS: 2KINGS 24:8-17, PSALM 79, MATTHEW 7:21-29

As I welcome you beloved friends to this day, may I remind you to cast all your cares, worries, anxieties and troubles unto God; for he is an everlasting rock (Isa. 26:4); Let me also challenge all of us to walk righteously in this remaining part of the year and keep our faith and trust in the Lord alive. That so, we may be setting our paths straight and establishing firm foundations so as to withstand the many stormy challenges that lie ahead.

Dear friends, for Jesus, hearing God’s words and acting on them is a needful requisite for entrance into eternity. He that hears his words and keeps them faithfully is likened to a wise man who builds his house on rock and no tempest or rage or torment prevails against it.

What is it I see now; a generation of so-called Christians whose houses of faith are built on sandy foundations! I see in us a people who hear God’s word everyday but seldom act on it. I see a generation of hypocrites who parade themselves as Christians yet hardly abide by the littlest command of God. I also see in my generation an active group of humans who are ‘busy-bodies’ speaking always in the name of God but acting ALWAYS in the opposite direction. That is not all, I see in this generation a hoard of ‘Church-goers’ who are everything but Christians given our negative lifestyles.

The call my brothers and sisters is for us to be that righteous nation which keeps faith in God, that nation whose mind is perpetually fixed on him, who trusts in God come what may. May we not harden our hearts but obey God’s words when we hear them today thereby building for ourselves strong faith foundations unshaken by both storm and wind. May we not be like Jehoiachin who reigned over Jerusalem and instead of heeding God’s commands did what was evil in his (God) sight (2Kgs. 24:9). The consequences were massive; his ‘house experienced a great fall’ as Nebuchadnezzar took him captive. Same fate may befall us if we don’t fasten our faith on God and remain faithful to his dictates.
