CYCLE II: HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: God before blood!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

HOMILY: Micah 7:14-15,18-20; Matt. 12:46-50

If your Father were the President, you’ll expect to be able to see him anytime, right? But you might soon come to realise that his position would make him consider country before family most times. So when he misses meal times, recreational times, and rushes off to work just after waking up in the morning, you’ll try to understand. Today, Jesus corrects a Jewish impression. He makes it clear to the man who came to tell him that his mother and his brothers were longing to see him outside, that divine ties came before blood ties. Phew!

Friends, this is a hard one to swallow. How am I supposed to see sister A or brother B, sitting next to me in Church, as more of a sibling to me than my own blood siblings? But here’s the thing! That we’re first sons and daughters of God, and heirs of the Father, before we’re blood related, need not reduce, but enhance our filial relatedness. When we strive to live right and do God’s will, we become even more than blood relatives of Jesus and of one another. Let us pray with the Prophet Micah, that God may have mercy on us and forgive us for the times we’ve put family before God, Amen.

God bless your day ahead.
