CYCLE II: HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 33RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: USE YOUR TALENTS TO PREPARE FOR HEAVEN, YOUR REAL HOME.

BY: Rev. Fr. Jacob Aondover ATSU

HOMILY: REVELATION 4:1-11, PSALM 150, LUKE 19:11-28

‘We are not citizens of the world journeying towards heaven, but citizens of heaven making our way there through this world’. Our home is heaven where the throne of Christ whose appearance is like jasper and carnelian and whose throne is surrounded by a halo as brilliant as an emerald. From his throne comes flashes of lightening, rumblings, and pears of thunder and in front of it is a sea of glass like crystal (Rev. 4:3-6). This is a glimpse of the beauty of our home where our master is and where we are called to struggle consciously, using all the talents we have to reach.

Friends in Christ, heaven is a ‘beauty’ that should attract every human being. That is why God made his creation a reflection of himself. The four living creatures who exclaimed “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty, who was, who is, and who is to come” in Revelation 4:6-8 represent the best of creation. The lion stands for NOBILITY, the ox for STRENGTH, the man, INTELLIGENCE and the eagle represents SWIFTNESS. (These creatures have been used in the Church to represent the four evangelists). Brethren, we see in creation God’s dignity, His strength, His wisdom and His swift agility or omnipresence; besides, we all have a thing of God in the various gifts we are given. Like the two faithful servants in Luke 19:16-19 who used their talents wisely; building the master’s treasury and earning for themselves a pleasing reward, we too are called to use our God given talents properly so as to gain entrance into the eternal city, our real home.

Beloved, we notice how the four creatures are distinct in nobility, strength, wisdom and swiftness, so too are our gifts or talents. As they are masters in their domains: the lion, supreme among beasts; the ox, supreme among cattle; the eagle, supreme among birds and man, supreme among all creatures, I challenge us all to strive towards mastering your talents. Indeed we are called in all we do to; ROAR like lions, SOAR like eagles, DEVELOP our intellect and use all for one goal; ‘to behold the face of God and like twenty four elders, be privileged to worship him face to face saying: “Worthy are you Lord God, to receive glory, and honour, and power” Rev. 4:11. Amen. Nothing should stand in our way as we return to our home, heaven.
