Daily homily for Monday of the 1st Week of Lent

Love is a practical phenomenon that implies sensitivity, goodwill, kind words, and good works. The criterion of judgment at the end of life will not be based on how many times we went to Church, how many days we fasted, how many passages of the Bible we memorised. At the end of time, Jesus will ask how kind, sensitive and helpful were we to people who needed our help. The book of Leuiticus defines holiness as practical kindness: “Love your neighbour as yourself (19:18). The word ‘neighbour’ has different meanings: ordinarily, it means someone who lives close by; it also means a fellow human being or anyone who is in need. The needy include those who are hungry, naked, in prison, sick, homeless, wounded, and bereaved. A neighbour is Christ disguised, and that is why Jesus identifies himself with the needy and says “As you did (show kindness) to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:40). Therefore, to identify with the needy and the poor is to identify with Jesus. John Bunyan author of The Pilgrims says, “You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” Can we be more committed to doing good to the least, to the last, and to the lost during this season of Lent?
