HOMILY FOR MONDAY MAY 23 2022

In difficult moments of life, we hear many inner voices speaking to us. During such moments, we often forget to resort to the help of the Holy Spirit, the greatest counsellor that leads believers to the truth. The Apostle Paul discovered crass ignorance about the Holy Spirit when he asked some believers in Ephesus: “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed.” They answered, “No, we have not even heard there is a Holy Spirit (Acts 19:2). Even today, many people share this kind of ignorance about the Holy Spirit.

Just before leaving this world, Jesus promised to send the spirit of truth to guide his disciples (John 14:16-17). We desperately need that spirit of truth in a world filled with confusion, lies, and deceit.

Through the years and to the present day, good men and women opened themselves to the counsellor, the spirit of truth.

For example, a prominent theologian Yves Congar in his lifetime declared, “I have consecrated my life to the service of truth. I have loved the truth and I still love it, as one loves a person.” Likewise, St. Athanasius also consecrated himself to the truth when he said, “If the world goes against the truth, then Athanasius goes against the world.” Do we always seek the help of the Holy Spirit to know the truth and stand for what is true and just?
